The House of Comandon has been a family business for almost 200 years, with many generations playing an important role in the Cognac category. Founded in 1821 by the very young and ambitious Pierre Comandon, headquarters were established on the banks of the Charente river in Jarnac, where he would be voted as the mayor in 1851. Staying true to his love for Cognac and his company even while serving as a civil politician, Pierre passed the House of Comandon to his son, Louis, who took over the running of the Cognac house. He, too, was an active political voice in the Charente and was partly responsible for the 1909 and 1936 decrees, which finally lead to the controlled appellation of Cognac. Today, Comandon is an ‘independent bottler’ run by the Vigneron family which sources their cognac to bring the best selections available in as large a variety of styles as possible. In recent years, Comandon has received the highest recognitions attainable and is the only boutique cognac producer to win twice ‘World’s Best Cognac’ at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition (2010 & 2014).

Comandon pioneered the concept of ‘single cask’ cognac in 2010 -- somewhat rebellious against the general rule of blending multiple cognacs to produce a consistent profile each year. Single cask cognac does not allow for such standardization. They are limited to one cask and unrepeatable, which makes them authentic. Comandon’s leading inspiration is to look for casks with cognacs which are truly representative of specific styles -- different vintages, the 6 cognac appellations (Grande Champagne, Petite Champagne, Borderies, Fins Bois, Bons Bois, and Bois Ordinaires), different cask strengths, variable filtrations, distillation on or off the lees, aged in dry versus wet cellars, among other production choices.
